DESIGN NOTES: The masonry of the field recalls the stone tower that is central to the arms of the armiger’s ancestor, Axel Magnus von Arbin. By creating the field from stonework rather than solely using it as a charge, the field also alludes to the armiger’s own experiences. The colors indicate both the national origin of the older arms and the armiger’s experience with the United States Navy through the dominance of blue and gold. Likewise, the motto “My help comes from the Lord” and the stones of the field are held together by the “help” of masonry lines of whilte/silver (argent) – a color that has been long associated with the divine in heraldic practice. Through/upon the tower window, flames can be seen, and on the golden drape are visible two fiery red wings. They represent the phoenix. The flames peeking through the window allude to the process of the phoenix moving from one stage to another. The wings, the most prominent symbol of a phoenix’s rebirth, are also set against a color associated with faith. The division of the field, chape ploye, suggests draped cloth or a cloak befitting a chaplain and also alludes to spiritual care and direction. This division of the field was used by Pope Benedict XVI, who established the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter. Above the field is a black galero hat. This is a custom for the arms of deacons in the Anglican heraldic tradition. White this is not a custom for deacons in the Catholic heraldic tradition, it is retained here from the Anglican. Below the hat are three lilies, which reference the scepter floral sprouting three fleurs-de-lis from the arms of the Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter. The lily is a symbol held by Our Lady of Walsingham.
